Much of the world economy is based on producing things for consumption which drives industry. If we want the world to develop sustainably, we need to understand how to be more responsible at both ends of this cycle. For this, universities must take steps towards an efficient use of resources and the minimization of waste.

How does the University of León contribute to the achievement of this objective?

  • 12.2. Actions towards responsible consumption and production
    • 12.2.1. We have a policy on the ethical sourcing of food and supplies.
Recognition of the University of León as a University for Fair Trade.
Institutional Declaration in favour of Fair Trade
    • 12.2.3. We have a manual on the management of hazardous materials.

We have an operating regulation and internal emergency plan for the radioactive facility at the University of León.

    • 12.2.4 The Green Office compiles data on waste generated at the University of Leon:

      Waste 2022

    • 12.2.5 The use of plastic is minimised:

The company operating the vending machines will try to supply food products by minimising the use of packaging (in any case, this should be made of recycled plastic), especially avoiding polyethylene.

    • 12.2.6. The use of disposable items is minimised.

The tender for the cafeteria service contract stipulates that the successful bidder must replace single-use containers (soft drinks and water) with returnable glass containers. As well as eliminating the use of single-use paper or plastic cups and using glass beakers.

    • 12.2.7 These policies extend to outsourced services and the supply chain such as cafeteria and vending machine contracts.
    • 12.2.8 These policies extend to construction contracts, e.g. the tendering contract for the construction of a new building and the tendering contract for work on photovoltaic installations for self-consumption on the roof of buildings for the faculty of biological and environmental sciences, the faculty of veterinary sciences and the veterinary clinic.
    • 12.3.1 The amount of waste generated and recycled across the University of Leon is measured.
